Urs Ch. Nef was full Professor of Law (private law in particular) in the Department of Law and Economics at ETH Zurich, starting April 1, 1987. He was head of the Department 1994-95. He retired end of September 2007.
Born on September 28, 1942, from Herisau, Switzerland, Prof. Nef studied law at the Universities of Zurich, Tübingen, and Montpellier. In 1971 he graduated from the University of Zurich. Teaching assignments at the Universities of St. Gall and Zurich followed. After studies in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, he qualified as a lecturer (habilitation) at the University of St. Gall. Prof. Nef initially practiced in a law office and later worked in the insurance field; he has been a member of various federal special commissions and of private organizations and worked as a judge at cantonal social insurance courts. Prof. Nef has compiled several publications in the areas of labor law, although he has primarily concerned himself with specialist areas of private and social insurance law.
Since 1994 Prof. Nef has directed the research group for technology law, on various projects in liability and insurance law. The group organized a yearly 'Industrial Law' seminar involving participants from science and industry.
