Prof. Dr. Allard Duursma

Allard Duursma is an Assistant Professor and chair of the Conflict Management and International Relations group at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on how mediation and peacekeeping can help to prevent and end armed conflict. He also studies the interlinkages between different types of armed conflict on the local, national, and international level. Allard uses both quantitative methods and case study methods in his research. He has initiated and led the development of the Peace observatory, a global dataset on peace negotiations in armed conflicts. He also frequently conduct research trips during which he conducts interviews with representatives of conflict parties, mediators, and other stakeholders. He completed his PhD at the University of Oxford in 2015, focusing on the role of legitimacy in mediation process. His work has been published in domain-specific journals like the Journal of Peace Research, International Peacekeeping, and the Journal of Conflict Resolution, but also in general audience journals like International Studies Quarterly, Comparative Political Studies, the European Journal of International Relations, and International Organization. He is the Editor-in-Chief at International Peacekeeping and the Executive Director at the Peace Observatory. Allard has conducted various consultancies for international organizations such as the African Union, the European Union, and the United Nations.
